Relatively unnoticed from relevant press and online communities, Yves Champollion seems to have released a new version of his TRADOS-compatible CAT-Tool Wordfast last week. Information gathered from his unfortunately unclear and not very informative website shows that a new version Wordfast 5.1m6 has been put online for download on September, 18th 2005. Also, Champollion seems to target language service providers engaged in larger projects by offering a server version of Wordfast, currently in beta phase. Wordfast Server 0.9.5b is advertised as "free for registered Wordfast users" featuring "the world's largest translation memory size by far" - up to 200 million translation units can be stored. According to Champollion's website, currently some 10.000 licenses of Wordfast are in use, mostly by freelancing translators. Wordfast gained momentum when the first versions were offered free of charge and later versions were offered for under 200 Euros/Dollars. Wordfast enjoys a growing fan and user community due to its TRADOS compatibility - allowing freelancers to work on "TRADOS-only" projects without having to pay for expensive TRADOS licenses.
