70 Macedonian volunteers joined the translation marathon organised by Foundation Metamorphosis and Free Software Macedonia and translated the latest OpenOffice.org version into Macedonian within 56 hours. "The fact that students at the department for Macedonian language participated in the marathon speaks for itself about the high awareness and interest in professional development towards new technologies of the future proof readers," said Nikolche Mickoski of Foundation Metamorphosis. The localised version of the open source office software package now includes Macedonian user interfaces and help files. The organisers announced that the next steps to be taken will be proof reading by professional proof readers and computer experts, as well as the preparation of user manuals before the software will finally be available for download. Recently, similar translation events have become popular around the world. While open source software and social projects traditionally rely on volunteer translators, 'translation marathons' organised by fan communities or foundations are relatively new trends found in the industrious glocalized markets. Harry Potter fan communities were among the first to organize translation events around the world to provide translated 'fan-fiction' within hours or days after the release of the latest novel in the series.
