Maltese translators at European institutions cause of concern

The shortage of Maltese translators at the EU had prompted the Maltese government to encourage state-employed Maltese teachers to change their workplace and work as translators in the EU.

According to Malta Independent Online, the Maltese government now urges the translators to return to Malta by changing the conditions of special leave for a number of teachers and other government employees who are presently working as translators with European institutions.

As a result, translators currently staying in Luxembourg or Brussels are threatened with losing their post and all benefits in Malta.

The Maltese Union of Teachers (MUT) said that some translators are already preparing to return to Malta, and one of the main consequences is that this will leave a large gap in the Maltese translating sections of the various European institutions.
