Due to the addition of three new official languages, Bulgarian, Romanian and Irish, a number of extra linguists were recruited by the Directorate-General for Translation (DGT) and for Interpretation (SCIC). By 1 January 2007 more than 30 translators for Bulgarian and Romanian were working for DGT and another 150 successful candidates are on the shortlists for each of these languages, a press release informs.

Whereas the recruitment of sufficient Bulgarian and Romanian translators seems merely a matter of time, the addition of Irish to the list of official EU languages is more challanging since the translator market is limited. The DGT has started with one translator, one assistant and one manager. Another two translators will start working within the next few months.

In 2006 the costs of interpretation in the EU institutions amounted to about ?195 million, with equals ?0.42 per citizen per year. The cost of interpretation per citizen is not expected to rise significantly following the accession of Bulgaria and Romania and the addition of Irish.

In 2007 the cost of translation in the Commission is estimated to be around ?302 million. The cost of all translation and interpretation in all EU institutions is less than 1% of the total EU budget of ?112 billion.
